The Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 jacket includes a removable spine pad with a pocket for an optional C.E. spine protector for maximum protection. To achieve a perfect fit the Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 jacket is designed with elastic sleeve adjusters. A Sure Fit® adjustable waistband further aides you in getting a custom like fit. An 8" zipper is built into the Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 jacket to allow you to zip motorcycle pants to the jacket. A reflective stripe is built into the Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 jacket giving it maximum style, as well as increasing nighttime visibility. I've owned this jacket for 6 months now, and have been wearing it 6-7 days a week. Its been the wettest Australian summer I can remember and (predictably) I have had low-side accident. Time for a review!Sizing. Buy one or maybe even two sizes smaller than you initially think. For reference I am 174cm / 82kgs (5'9" / 180lb) - I initially bought a large jacket and was swimming in it. I bought a small jacket and that fit perfectly. Half-a-star off for the huge sizing.Everyday summer wear. This Jacket is outstandingly good. Many people asked "how can you wear all that gear on hot days", the mesh just works! I ordered a white/black jacket but received a black/black one, at the time I didn't mind but in hindsight I should have asked for a replacement. Black is not a cool color standing around in the Australian sun.Armour details. The shoulder and arm armor is actually identical and interchangeable, this is probably for manufacturing efficiency but doesn't seem to have caused any issues. The main back armor plate is two-layer foam rubber (about 1.5cm thick) - I didn't notice it was there during riding (until I hit the road!). There is also side-of-rib and hip armor sewn into the jacket (not removable, and in smaller panel so as not to impact mobility).Impact protection. I had a low-side accident and my bike was a write-off. I didn't hit the road *really* hard (thankfully), but I did slide across one lane of traffic over a gutter and over the verge... I got up straight away - body armor is good!!! People talk up Kevlar jeans etc for abrasion resistance but I think impact protection (ie. rubber and foam) is even more important. The mesh was a little ripped at the elbow (the road unsuccessfully tried to remove the elbow from the jacket). I had a small tender spot (bit of swelling but no bruise) on the front of my elbow - the impact protection obviously doesn't go all the way around! Bottom-line - the jacket did its job when it was supposed to!Wet weather days. This is reason number two that the jacket isn't five stars. The insert is great for colder days (it cuts the wind-flow) and is sufficient for light-rain. During torrential rain days this jacket is pretty bad, I had nylon overpants, and the jacket outer layer gets saturated and wicks through at the pant/jacket join. A one piece oversuit is nearly essential. The jacket doesn't dry naturally overnight and I removed all the armor (very easy) and put it into the tumble-drier with no obvious ill effects.Practicality. For dry/hot weather touring/commuting this jacket (with matching pants) is ideal. You'll stay relatively cool and have the comfort of knowing you have adequate protection if you have a fall. It is obviously not a "hard-core" track-day suit, those come with their own compromises and price tags. The inner pocket is great for wallet / ID etc. I never used the internal key/sunglasses clip, but somebody might.Overall. My insurance company covers any damage to protective gear and I will be buying an identical-style jacket in something other than an all-black color scheme. I will also be buying a one-piece wet-weather suit (suggestions welcome!)
